Show Notes CYH Episode #46: Today's Hug - Communicating In 2020: 10 Tips to Be Your Best Self

Welcome friends to Consider Yourself Hugged episode 46. Today’s FIRST hug for the New Year: Communicating in 2020: 10 tips to be your best self (Click here or pic to listen).

I’m Dr. Tami West, here every week to bring you tips on living a life that brings you mental and emotional wellbeing.

It would seem weird to jump right in without mentioning how my holidays were! I’d also love to hear how yours was, maybe in the show notes comments or on Facebook. (Click here to listen).

Let 2020 be the year for self-awareness. A few years ago I asked Tim what behaviors were annoying in me. You can imagine he was like Ahhhhh!!! We were working a trade show for a product we created and used to sell and he said, “Sometimes when someone walks by our booth you kinda LUNGE at them in excitement. I think they get scared."

I had no idea! And most of us don’t really know how well or how poor we communicate without getting some feedback. I’m starting 2020 with this topic because communication really is foundational for great mental and emotional wellbeing. Can’t say no? Don’t speak up and ask for things? People don’t seem to connect with you? ALL communication issues. Make sure to listen till the end because in February I’m doing a free webinar for 10 people. Honestly, it’s the 1st of a few freebies as I branch out more into communication and speaker coaching.

OK you’ve waited long enough! How can you be a person that others want to be around? One that has a reputation for being kind, confident, thoughtful, attentive? These 10 tips will include how you mentally process BEFORE you speak as well as what you say Here we go! (Click here to listen to the full version!)

1. Check assumptions.

2. Evaluate benefits and/or risks to your conversations.

3. Say no thoughtfully.

4. Ask for help.

5. Respectfully interrupt.

6. Ask questions.

7. Replace some phrases/words.

8. Learn about communication with other styles.

9. Learn powerful language.

10. Remember that language is action.

And that’s our time for today. I hope you have had a FABULOUS start to your new year! I know these tips were quick, but it’s a start to becoming the best communicators that we can be. We all have room to grow in the realm of communication, and it’s something we have control over. Please let me know what you try and the successes and challenges you have. I’m starting giveaways again, and this year I’m going to try to make them pertinent to one of our episodes. So this month, I’ll draw from comments on the show notes and give away a copy of PowerPhrases!

I’m also excited to announce that in 2020 I’m expanding my communication coaching. I’ll be doing topics like relational communication, workplace communication, and giving presentations whether to 3 people or 3,000 people. I’m starting with a free webinar “Creating and Delivering Mind-Blowing Presentations” on February 18. I’m only accepting 10 people because it’ll be super interactive, so click here or pic to register!

As always, Please pass the show link along to a friend or two and subscribe, download, and review wherever you are listening. And look around here (tamiwest.com) to get info if you’d like me to speak at your next event and also you’ll find the promised pictures. And I’d love for you to follow me on Facebook, my primary social media home at facebook.com/tamiwestseminars. Thank you so much for listening and growing our special community! This year, let’s end each episode with a new mantra! I hope it will play over and over in your head. Here goes:

I pray that each day you remember to love, to serve, to feel worthy, to grow, to connect, to change, and to be the best person you can be for yourself AND for the other humans in your world!

And until next time (I will never change this part!) Consider Yourself Hugged 😘🤗
